Waste paper recycling is extremely necessary to manage the waste papers and paper products.
Why?
Do you know how much paper waste is produced each year by 1 person? It is almost 700 tonnes.
And do you know how many trees are to be cut down to produce 700 tonnes of paper?
11,900 trees! That means, one person uses 11,900 trees per year.
Not only trees, but we also need water, oils, chemicals in great quantities to manufacture this much of paper.
Every one tonne of recycled paper will save 17 trees, 2-3 oil barrels, 4100 kW electricity, 4m³ of a landfill, and 31,780 liters of water.
That puts us in the position to think about why we should recycle paper as much as possible.
Where can you get waste paper to recycle?
Let us answer the very basic question first.
How to begin with the recycling process and where can you get waste paper to recycle?
The answer lies in the areas nearby you.
Schools, colleges, corporate offices, stationery shops, newspaper printing hubs, government offices, etc. are all the major sources of obtaining waste papers.
Schools and colleges have the notebooks and journals of students that they no longer need.
Government offices produce documents and letters that are no more usable.
Newspaper printing hubs sometimes have to discard all the printed papers because of minor mistakes.
You can approach these places to obtain waste papers in large quantities.
The waste papers are sold in kilograms or tonnes in the market.

How to recycle waste paper?
Plant to Paper
Paper to Paper ✓
Once you obtain the logs of paper from the above sources, break them into shredded particles.
Wash these particles using water and chemicals. Once the particles are washed, subject them to heat.
Apply an ample amount of heat to these particles.
Then, the paper fibers should be pressed using screening machines to remove the contaminants from the mixture.
The contaminants should be removed thoroughly to make the paper pollutants free.
Paper logs contain impurities like pins, glue, plastic, etc. which should be removed completely from the pulp.
Once the mixture is pure and free from all the impurities, the paper fibers are again washed with chemicals to remove the ink stains from them.
Some bleaching chemicals are added to give a bright white color to the paper that is going to be produced.
This pulp is then processed through the paper manufacturing machine to produce recycled paper.
Why recycle waste paper?
Did you know?
40% of lesser gases are emitted in recycled paper production
25% less energy is required to produce recycled paper
40% less wastewater is produced by recycling paper
That means,
when you recycle paper, you serve in lowering air pollution, water pollution, and saving energy.
What else can you recycle?
Below are the 10 categories of wastes that you can recycle –
- Newspapers, phone books, printer paper, junk mail, other paper materials
- Cardboard boxes, cereal boxes, old books
- Soda, beer, beverage cans, and other articles that are made from aluminum
- Glass bottles and glass jars
- Plastic bottles, bags, tiffins, boxes
- Computer printer ink and toner cartridges
- Household batteries and automobile batteries
- CFL bulbs are also recyclable
- TV’s, computers, laptops
- Electric cables and wires
Which papers are recycled the most?
A study has shown that the percentage of corrugated boxes being recycled is more than other papers.
Near about 31% of the total recycled paper comes from the corrugated boxes and cartons.
These boxes are containers mainly used for packaging.
The rest of the material contains newspapers, notebook papers, etc.
Grades of Paper
Papers are classified into grades ranging from high to low.
Grade of the paper is an important characteristic of the paper which depends on the manufacturing process.
The newspaper has the lowest grade because it has been produced by recycling papers several times.
The high-grade papers have a longer fiber length.
Thus, they have higher strength properties than lower grade papers.
The paper which has been recycled five to six times will have the lowest fiber length.
If you are recycling the paper for 6th or above time, you need to mix virgin fibers to it make it strong and durable.
You can recycle the paper 7 times.

After that, it becomes useless as the fiber length decreases up to a greater extent which causes the breakage of papers very easily.
So that was pretty much about the recycling of papers. We hope you got to know something new today. Share this article with your friends and colleagues to spread awareness about recycling. Please leave your comments in the box below as we love to read them.
