Globally, the Indian paper industry is responsible for about 3.7% of paper production.
The approximate turnover of the industry is about INR 60,000 crore i.e. about USD 8.5 billion. More than 2 million people are employed by the paper industry in India.
The paper industry has been set up in India since the 10th century.
It was started as a small cottage mill by the traditional craftsmen called Kagzis. This was the first hand made paper mill.
The main product they used to develop paper was gunny bags, rags, ropes, etc. Later, the hand made papers in the cottage mill were replaced by machine-made papers.
A small part of the industry is still active in the manufacturing of hand made papers continuing the traditional accent.

The annual output of paper in India is more than 10 million tonnes with an average turnover estimation of 200,000 million.
Considering the demands, the paper production is expected to rise up to 13 million tonnes by 2020.
Indian States Manufacturing Paper
The major states leading and accounting in the paper production in India are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana, and Assam.
Maharashtra is at the first rank produces 18% of the paper India, With the presence of 63 mills in Sangli, Kalyan, Balarshah, Pimpn, Nagpur, Mumbai, Pune, Bhiwandi, Nandurbar, Kamptee, Vikroli, Tumur, Khopoli, and Chinchwad.
Andhra Pradesh ranks second with 19 mills and 13% production rate. Major centers in Rajahmundry, Sirpur, Khammam, Srikakulum, Tirupati, Kurnool, Pallancheru, Nellore, Apidik, Bodhan, Bhadrachalam, and Kakinada.
Madhya Pradesh is mainly a provider of raw materials like bamboo, Sabai, grass, etc., with 18 mills and 6.62% production capacity. Major centers in Bhopal, Amlpi, Ratlam, Abdullaganj, Rewa, Rajgarh, Vidisha, and Indore.
Karnataka with 17 mills accounts for 5.48% production and uses bagasse obtained from sugar factories as raw material.
Major centres in Bhadravati, Dandoli, Munirabad, Harihar, Mundyud, Bangalore, Nandangaud, Belagola, Mandya, Ramnagaram, and Krishnarajsagar.
Gujarat with 55 mills stands at fifth position with major centers in Rajkot, Vadodara, Bilmoria, Navsari, Surat, Barjod, Songarh, Ahmedabad, Vapi, Limbdi, Gondal, Bharuch, Dijandranagar, Udvada, and Bavla.
Uttar Pradesh has the largest number of mills i.e. 68. However, the production rate remains at 9% due to unfavorable conditions. Major centers in Saharanpur, Lalkuan, Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Meerut, Modinagar, Gorakhpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Kalpi, Pipraich, Muzaffarnagar, Budaun, and Manipur.
West Bengal is apioneer state in the paper industry and obtains bamboo and other raw materials from Assam, Orissa and Jharkhand. Major centers in Titagarh, Kankinara, Sheoraphuli, Chandrabati, Triveni, Raniganj, Bansberia, Naihati, Kolkata and Baranagore.
Odisha has 8 mills and contributes to 6% production. Major centers in Brijrajnagar, Chandwar, and Raygada.
Tamil Nadu has 24 small-sized mills with major centers in Cheranmahadevi, Pallipalayam, Amravathinagar, Pahanasam, Udmalpet, Chennai, Salem, and Madurai.
Punjab has 23 mills working with consistent production. Major centers in Hoshiarpur, Sangrur, Sailakhurd, and Rajpura.
Haryana having 18 mills with a major mill in Yamunanagar, and other mills in Faridabad, Dharuhera and Jagadhari.
Assam is a raw material supplying center, mainly bamboo, to all other paper mills. Nowgaon has one of the largest paper mills of India. Other centers in Guwahati, Cachar, and Lumding.
