The quality of the paper is the most crucial part of the paper manufacturing industry. It is important to keep the production assets in high-class conditions for all manufacturers.

In the previous blog, we mentioned about the turnover that the paper industry is going to acquire by 2020.

It was approximately $1.57 Billion. In this blog,

we’re going to discuss with you some of the important factors to consider to increase the paper making quality for your paper manufacturing industry.

1. Evaluate Your QCS Performance

Paper Industry uses the Quality Control System (QCS) for mapping and controlling the quality of the papers produced by the paper machinery.

The ultimate goal of the QCS is to generate solid and uniform products that meet the customer’s requirements.

Paper manufacturers should make sure that the results given by the QCS should be 99% accurate on average and try to work on the results and improve the manufacturing quality accordingly.

There are other Quality Management Softwares available in the market to evaluate the performance, especially, the quality of your product.

2. Reduce MD and CD variation

MD i.e. Machine Direction and CD i.e. Cross Direction together are responsible to decide the tensile strength of the paper sheet.

Basis weight is a very important quality factor in paper manufacturing.

Since there is variation occurring at both the paper-web i.e.

CD as well as the production line i.e.

MD, there is the control problem.

The less will be the variation of the CD and MD values,

the greater will be the strength of the paper sheet.

3. Minimize Sheet Break

Sheet breaking is one of the major issues that abbreviate the quality of the paper instantly.

It also decreases the reliability and efficiency of the paper producing machines.

Some of the reasons for sheet breaks are widened pulp sheet,

incorrect oscillation rate of sheet, incorrect tension in dryer inlet and outlet, equipment failures, power loss, production rate change, sheet snap due to weak sheet, etc.

So by avoiding the above causes, and applying correct techniques, we can reduce the sheet breaks.

4. Minimize Downgrades

Quality downgrades need to be minimized by increasing the reliability of the pulp production process,

decreasing financial costs, improving the paper quality control system, increasing the safety of plant operators, etc.

Consider the following aspects for decreasing the downgrade rate –

  • Keep sufficient moisture in the paper sheets
  • Assemble equipment in a way that gives proper sheet formation
  • Use high quality of pulp material
  • Avoid foldings in the paper sheets

5. Proper Final Finishing

Finishing might be the last stage of the production process, however, it is a very important part as many the customers believe in ‘first impressions’.

The small things like sizing, coating, calendering, etc.

play an important role in deciding the quality of the product.

Moreover, attributes such as brightness, opacity, smoothness, uniformity, gloss, etc. also play a vital role.

The end product should be evenly winded on the rolls before dispatching.

Paper Industry is going to get huge with the constant deployment of innovations and technological aspects in it.

Every Paper Manufacturing Industry should focus on the below goals to achieve by 2020.

  • Increase in the usage of fiber volume
  • Increase in the recovery and recycling
  • Reduction in serious safety accidents
  • Improvement of efficient energy usage
  • Continuous improvements in the production
  • Minimum water usage
  • Reduced fiber loss
  • Reduction in GHG emissions(if any)

Product quality is a crucial factor in maintaining customer satisfaction.

We should not only aim to provide the best quality with minimized costs, but also have a competitive approach towards the industry and business.

    • Hello Dinesh, Good question! Tensile strength is calculated with force per unit width, generally with respect to machine direction. It is expressed in unit of N/m. Sometimes, however it is calculated on the basis of CD. The more the MD/CD, the more will be the tensile strength of the machine.

      Thanks
