The Paper Industry in India began with the setup of the first Indian Papermill in the Srirampur city (now Serampore) of Hooghly district in West Bengal in 1812.
Srirampur city has a desirable environment for the cultivation and weaving of cotton and silk. The mill was set up by John Clark Marshman and it was powered by a steam engine.
However, the mill couldn’t make a remarkable business and was called for a failed project.
In 1870, another paper mill was established in Kolkata that gained the attention of the Indian Government, and soon, the paper industry was categorized as a ‘Core Industry’.

India is the 15th largest paper manufacturing hub in the world. Each year around 13 million tonnes of paper is manufactured in India.
India contributes to around 2.6% share of paper manufacturing in the world.
The major states contributing to the highest paper production in India are Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Orrisa, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.
Other states that produce a measurably good amount of paper are Assam, Bihar, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
